Power Rankings 2022 mid-year update : Events

2022 events

We think watching which events riders choose to participate in is almost as interesting as watching who wins the races.

Here are the events that have made the rankings along with their participation numbers. Events in grey are not included in the rankings but are included here for your edification.

The way we calculate this thing is two-fold. For an event to be included in the rankings we use total participation. How many riders were at the event, including all distances. (Events must have at least 750 riders.) Points are awarded based on the number of riders in the most competitive distance. For example, Gravel locos had 835 total riders at the event, but only 203 riders chose to compete in the 150-mile competition, so the points awarded are weighted accordingly. This means Barry Roubaix is weighted less than Mid South. Even though there were more riders overall at Barry Roubaix, Barry Roubaix had a smaller competitive field.

Notes:

  • CO2UT was cancelled at the last minute due to weather
  • Barry Roubaix said they had 4000 registrants, but harsh weather had a dampening effect on participation. Apparently nearly half of registrants deferred or stayed home.
  • This is the first year that Unbound has been the largest event on the calendar in terms of participation.
  • Paris Ancaster is not included because it is held in Canada. We have to draw the line somewhere.
